Summer time is a great time of year to get out of the house and go camping. One of my favorite places to go camping is at the Oconee State Park located in Mountain Rest, SC. It has plenty to offer in recreational activities. It sits on 1,165 acres and was built in 1935. You can rent canoes and paddle boats and it has a swimming area. You can fish or go hiking on eight nature trails. They even have an all accessible cabin you can rent.
If camping isn’t your thing, you can go kayaking. My favorite place to go kayaking is at Lake Jocassee. Lake Jocassee is a 7,500 acre lake that is a 300 foot deep reservoir located in Devils Fork State Park. The lake is known for its clear and cool water. It is fed by Appalachian mountain rivers. Lake Jocassee has four major waterfalls and a few smaller ones. In my opinion, it is one of the prettiest lakes I have ever seen.
Another activity that I enjoy doing in the summertime is going handcycling. My favorite place to go handcycling is at the Swamp Rabbit Trail located in Greenville, SC. The trail is 19.9 miles long and isn’t too hilly. It offers great scenery along the trail. If you want to take a break from your ride, the trail offers areas to get something to eat or go shopping in some really cool shops. Handcycling and kayaking are both really enjoyable and a great way to exercise.
However some individuals, depending on level of injury, can’t do those things as easily or might not have the resources to obtain adaptive equipment. I was blessed with a grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation to get my handcycle. Even if you don’t have a kayak or handcycle or don’t enjoy camping, there are still plenty of outdoor activities you can do and find enjoyment.
In the summertime, I enjoy going on hikes in my everyday wheelchair or my off-road wheelchair – the Grit Freedom chair. One of my favorite places to go on a hike is at the South Carolina Botanical Gardens located in Clemson, SC. It sits on 295 acres and offers nature trails and pathways. It features ponds and streams. I love taking my daughter and letting her feed the ducks. I was also surprised to find out that they have a few Redwood trees growing in the gardens.
The last adventurous activity that I enjoy doing is going to see waterfalls. One of my favorite waterfalls to visit is White Waterfalls. It is located in two different places – the upper falls is in North Carolina and the lower falls is in South Carolina. The upper falls is 411 feet in size and the lower falls is 200 feet. It is truly beautiful and is just one of many beautiful things that God created!
Summertime is here and there are plenty of places in our country to go and explore. Many places are accessible for those of us in wheelchairs. I want to encourage you to get outside and start your adventure. Go enjoy the beauty that God created for us. I hope you all have a great fun-filled and safe summer. Tips to keep in mind:
