Due to some drainage complications after Maddie’s scoliosis surgery, we were readmitted to the hospital for monitoring and ended up still being here for her 6th birthday. We were upset that we weren’t going to be able to do much to make her day special from the confines of a hospital room, but due to the overwhelming kindness of friends, family, and the hospital staff, this birthday ended up being one of the most memorable yet!
Thanks to social media, I was able to keep everyone updated on Maddie Kate with relative ease, sending out updates daily for all the many people praying for us to be able to get home soon. I happened to mention the day before her big day that Maddie was inviting each doctor, nurse, or hospital worker that entered her room to this amazing (albeit made up) birthday party that she said she was having full of “Lots of food, crafts, and of course cupcakes” as she kept repeating.
The morning of her birthday, balloons and a basket of goodies arrived for Maddie shortly after we woke up. Little did we know, it was the first of MANY deliveries we would receive that day. Her neurosurgeon came by and dropped off balloons and chocolate when they rounded to check on her. There were knocks at our door with new deliveries almost every hour. One of my cousins stopped in and was carrying in balloons and someone in the parking garage asked “Oh are you going to room 123 too?” Two people brought us cupcakes that Maddie Kate was so excited to share with each of the nurses when they came in. We had a sign on her door to let the staff know it was her special day so many stopped in to share a cupcake and drop off a stuffed animal or sing to her.
After all was said and done, we had twenty balloons filling every nook and cranny of her room, about thirteen stuffed animals cuddling in her bed, and countless other goodies. We had sweet calls and texts all day that made this birthday more special than we could have ever imagined. We appreciate each and every person that showered our girl with so much love that the cup was running over. Never underestimate the fun of a hospital themed birthday party!
